Statement
“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.”
Audre Lorde
I make pottery that examines the intersection of my racial and gender identities. This is leading me to a new understanding of my own body image after confronting my muddied familial history of alcoholism, obesity, and intergenerational social exclusion. My introspective analysis is supported by learning about the history of servitude unique to my African American and Caribbean culture, and the women who became matriarcal leaders supporting their communities despite facing adversity.
